Great Expectations, indeed.

Monday, January 30th, 2006

I want to visit the Philippines, one day. More so, I want to meet my family. That would be nice.

I’m here, firstly, to say, that I adore Great Expectations. I think it’s a great story. I can understand why some people think it’s boring, but personally, I don’t think so. Definitely to be listed among my favourites.

And in the humanities book, I’m now very interested in reading Crime and Punishment. Speaking of humanities reading, the selected readings we’re going to have to read tomorrow (”The Bet” (Anton Chekhov) and “The Story of an Hour” (Emily Chopin)) are very good. I enjoyed them very much, and again, I’m now intruiged by Chekhov.

Oh, and as for the interest regarding Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero”, all I can find so far is that it reflects the possibility or idea of Ravel having Alzheimer’s (or just plain ol’ dementia), due to the repition of melody with absolutely no change.

And that it’s a musical aphrodesiac (for those who are somewhat sexually illiterate: it’s supposed to heighten sexual experience). Apparently the tempo, rhythm and “building climax” have something to do with that. Also, the internet states that the song was used as an accompaniment in a film scene that is lovemaking. 10 (1979), I believe.

Now, I must absolutely hear this for myself…

…searching…

…downloading…

…while I’m here I might as well download some Schoenberg…

…and more Paganini because I’ve been going on a Paganini binge…

…this is taking too long. I’ll be back later.
